Sanitize and Disinfect Food and Home Areas to Kill Viruses and Bacteria

The fear of what we’re facing seems to spread faster than the virus itself. The corona virus threatens every household all over the world and no one is exempted.

It has gone from Asia to Europe and the US. From a person who had a close contact with someone from Wuhan to someone who has never left home for weeks. Threatening as it is and contagious as the virus can be, we must not live in fear.

The “circuit breaker” that’s been going on for a week now in the whole Singapore has given us more time to research on the internet. And yes, there are tons of articles giving us tips on how best to protect ourselves at this time.

Since it has been proven that the corona virus can be transferred through hand-to-hand or hand-to-food contact, we’re going to talk about sanitizing your home and some of the food you bring from outside.

Let’s start with meat and vegetables.

Imagine touching meat products, whether sealed or not, and vegetables from the market and bringing it to your home.

Choose properly packed meat and vegetables

It will be better to purchase frozen meat that’s properly packed and labelled. Make sure that the vegetables you buy have been kept properly and safely by the seller. Check the packaging and label if there is.

Wash your hands before preparation

Knowing how the virus can be transmitted, the first step you need to do when you arrive home is to wash your hands. Do this even before preparing the food you bought.

Running tap water or baking soda solution

Clean the vegetables in running tap water thoroughly. You can also make a water and baking soda solution where you can submerge the vegetables for 5 minutes before washing them in running tap water.

Peel the vegetables

Peeling some vegetables like carrots, onions, potatoes, and the like is also a protective measure against viruses and bacteria.

Clean the kitchen surfaces often

Kitchen surfaces like countertops, tiles, and grout can be a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. They should all be cleaned regularly. At least once a day, spray disinfectant on them and wipe them with clean towel.

Clean kitchen utensils too

Chopping boards, knives and food containers should also be thoroughly cleaned. One useful tip is by disinfect the sponge used for cleaning the utensils.

Clean your sink often

The sink is primarily used to clean food, plates, and kitchen utensils every single day. Therefore, it’s but right to clean and disinfect your sink regularly. One effective way to do that is by using detergent mixed with bleach on the surface of the sink and scrubbing the whole area with a sponge or a brush.

After that, disinfect using vinegar, which is a safe, natural, an effective way of killing bacteria and viruses. Use natural fresheners afterwards to remove the strong vinegar odor.

Thoroughly clean the drain too

The sink drain usually houses lots of bacteria and viruses because they are not often cleaned. These impurities can reach up to the inside of your pipes and plumbing. As mentioned above, you can use vinegar as a cleaner because it’s great in killing germs and in disinfecting plumbing parts.

However, if you notice a slow draining of water in your sink, better get help from professionals who provide clogged repair services. Your drain needs to be unclogged first before any cleaning methods become effective.

Disinfect towels and rags

We often forget that viruses and bacteria also attach to dish towels, table rags, sponges, and towels. In fact the World Health Organization says the corona virus may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. Therefore, it’s a good practice to wash them with a regular detergent and a few drops of bleach.


Disinfect gadgets

Since you bring your gadgets outside the house whenever you buy necessities, you should also disinfect they using gadget cleaners that kill viruses and bacteria.


Toilet bowl disinfecting

Disinfecting is different from simply cleaning. For a surface as dirty as a toilet bowl, you really need to disinfect it, with our without the Covid 19 pandemic. After cleaning your toilet bowl using your regular method of cleaning, follow it up with a surefire way of killing tough bacteria and viruses. Use either vinegar or a bleach and water solution. You can simply pour vinegar on the sides of the toilet bowl. Allow it to rest for 30 minutes then rinse with warm water. You may also spray a solution of 1 liter of water mixed with 1 tablespoon of bleach on to the sides of the toilet bowl. In the same way, let it rest for 30 minutes and rinse it with water.
